There is an ongoing debate about whether economic growth should take priority over environmental protection. While economic development is essential for improving living standards, I believe that protecting the natural environment should be given greater priority because long-term prosperity depends on a healthy environment.

On the one hand, economic growth can bring significant benefits to a country. A growing economy creates jobs, increases household incomes and provides governments with more tax revenue. This additional revenue can be invested in healthcare, education and public infrastructure, which can directly improve people’s quality of life. Economic development may be particularly important for poorer countries, where millions of people still lack access to basic services. If governments impose strict environmental regulations too quickly, businesses may face higher costs and become less competitive, potentially slowing development and limiting employment opportunities.

On the other hand, prioritising economic growth at the expense of the environment can create serious long-term problems. Industrial expansion and intensive use of natural resources can cause air and water pollution, destroy ecosystems and contribute to climate change. These consequences can eventually damage the economy itself by reducing agricultural productivity, increasing healthcare costs and making some areas less suitable for human settlement. For this reason, governments should pursue economic development in ways that minimise environmental harm. Investment in renewable energy, cleaner technologies and efficient public transport can allow countries to continue developing while reducing pressure on natural resources. In my view, this balanced approach is more sustainable than choosing economic growth at any environmental cost.

In conclusion, economic growth can improve living standards and provide essential public services, particularly in developing countries. However, I believe environmental protection should have greater priority because sustainable economic progress cannot be achieved without preserving the natural environment.
