Modern cities are developing in different ways to meet the needs of growing populations. Some people prefer horizontal cities with low-rise buildings spread over a large area, while others favour vertical cities with many high-rise apartments. This essay will discuss both views, and I believe that vertical cities are a more practical solution for the future.
People who prefer horizontal cities often value space and a quieter lifestyle. Houses usually have private gardens, wider streets, and less crowded neighbourhoods. Families with children may enjoy having outdoor areas where they can relax or play. In addition, lower population density can reduce noise and create a stronger sense of community because neighbours tend to know each other better.
On the other hand, vertical cities make more efficient use of limited land. High-rise buildings allow more people to live close to workplaces, schools, and public transport. As a result, governments can reduce urban sprawl and protect surrounding farmland and natural areas. In my opinion, these advantages are more important because many large cities have limited space and rapidly growing populations. If tall buildings are carefully planned with parks, public facilities, and reliable transport, they can offer both convenience and a high quality of life.
In conclusion, although horizontal cities provide a peaceful living environment, I believe vertical cities are the better choice. They use land more efficiently, support sustainable urban development, and are better suited to the needs of modern societies.
