Many governments face the challenge of deciding how to invest limited transport budgets. Some people argue that improving public transport should be given higher priority than building new roads. I largely agree with this view because better public transport provides greater long-term benefits, although road construction is still necessary in some situations.
Investing in public transport can solve several urban problems at the same time. Reliable buses, trains, and metro systems encourage people to leave their private vehicles at home, which helps reduce traffic congestion and air pollution. Public transport is also more affordable for many people, especially students, elderly citizens, and low-income families. As a result, improving these services makes cities more accessible while reducing the environmental impact of daily travel.
Nevertheless, governments should not completely ignore the need for new roads. Rapid population growth and urban expansion may require additional road infrastructure, particularly in newly developed areas where transport networks are limited. New roads can also improve access for emergency services and commercial transport. However, simply building more roads often encourages greater car use, meaning congestion eventually returns. For this reason, expanding road networks alone is unlikely to provide a lasting solution.
In conclusion, I believe governments should allocate a larger proportion of transport funding to public transport while continuing to build new roads where they are genuinely needed. This balanced approach can improve mobility, protect the environment, and support sustainable urban development.
