University education can provide people with valuable knowledge and skills, but it can also be expensive. Some people therefore believe that governments should make university education free for everyone. I agree that higher education should be affordable, but I do not believe that completely free university education is the best use of public money.

There are clear advantages to making university education free. The main benefit is that it would give students from low-income families greater access to higher education. Without tuition fees, young people could choose courses according to their abilities and interests rather than their family’s financial situation. This could increase social mobility and allow more talented people to enter professional careers. Free education could also reduce the financial pressure on graduates, who often begin their working lives with significant student debt.

However, providing free university education to everyone would place a substantial burden on government budgets. Wealthy families would receive the same financial benefit as those who genuinely struggle to pay for education, which would not necessarily be a fair use of public funds. Governments also need to spend money on essential services such as healthcare, schools and public transport. A better approach would be to provide free or heavily subsidised university education for students from disadvantaged backgrounds while requiring others to make a reasonable contribution. Scholarships and income-based financial support could ensure that capable students are not prevented from studying because of their financial circumstances.

In conclusion, university education should be accessible to everyone, but I do not think it should be completely free for all students. Targeted financial support would provide greater educational opportunities for disadvantaged students while allowing governments to use public money more effectively.
