Fewer university students are now choosing science-related subjects, which could create problems for societies that depend on scientific expertise. This trend is mainly caused by the perceived difficulty of these subjects and concerns about career prospects, but universities and governments can take several steps to make science more attractive.

One reason is that science subjects are often considered difficult and demanding. Students may have to study complex theories, mathematics and practical work, which can make these courses less appealing than subjects that appear easier to manage. Another factor is that some young people have limited knowledge of the career opportunities available to science graduates. They may associate science only with laboratory research, rather than recognising the wide range of careers in technology, healthcare, engineering and environmental protection. As a result, students may choose other subjects because they believe they offer a more enjoyable university experience or clearer career opportunities.

Several measures could help reverse this trend. First, schools could provide students with more practical and engaging science lessons from an early age. Experiments, projects and visits to research facilities could show students how scientific knowledge is applied in real life. Universities and employers could also work together to explain the career opportunities available to science graduates and offer internships or work experience. In addition, governments could provide scholarships and other financial incentives for students who choose subjects in areas where there is a shortage of skilled workers. These measures would reduce financial concerns and give students a clearer understanding of the value of studying science.

In conclusion, science is becoming less popular because it is seen as difficult and its career opportunities are not always well understood. More practical teaching, better career guidance and financial support could encourage greater participation.
